One of the many things that frustrates me when raiding, is that most raiders don’t seem to understand that when healers have to heal them, that is usually a bad thing. Sure there are fights where everyone takes damage like Naj’entus or Gurtogg, and healers earn their pay on those fights. I’m talking about the fights where simply paying attention will allow your healers and dps to avoid taking damage.
You see, any time a healer is healing you, he isn’t healing the tank(s). You know, the guy who’s supposed to take damage. In most fights healers are broken up into groups with healing assignments, tank, off tanks, raid, etc. Here’s a good way to judge how stupid your raid is: Compare the number of healers who are healing your tank compared to your raid. If one or two healers are keeping your raid topped off, you’re good. If you have 6 or 7 healers dedicated to healing all the mouth breathers you’re raiding with, you’re boned.
The frustrating part, is that most people don’t see the problem. “I take damage and he heals me. That’s how it’s supposed to work!” No, fucktard. Move your fat ass so he doesn’t have to heal you and maybe he’ll keep the tank alive long enough for you to pound on your keyboard until the boss dies. A classic example of this was a Shadow Priest we used to have in our guild. She was in love with Shadow Word Death. She’d spam that spell like it was the only thing on her hot bars. She’d also die a lot and bitch about not getting healed. So after one raid I checked out a report on WoW Web Stats and discovered that she had taken nearly half of the damage that our main tank had during the course of the raid. Just this one stupid Shadow Priest had soaked up the heals from two healers all night. And she wasn’t even top dps. So next time one of your dps is bragging about how much they rock the damage meters see how much healing they’re sucking up. And then make sure they know just how bad they suck.

It is probable that the shadow priest using the Shadow Word of Death was also using Vampire Embrace which is fully capable of regerating the lost health without needing additional healing. If you analyze your WWS you might notice that the healthing done by the spell is equal or greater than the health lost.
If you read about shadow priests on elitist jerks or another well recieved website, you may learn that Shadow Word of Death is an important and large part of the max dps casting cycle for high-end shadow priests and there are only a hand full of fight where this should not be used.
Although I do not have a shadow priest, I believe to learn more about other classes can help my effective raid leading. Perhaps you may wish to do some research before appearing too ignorant about other classes by being critical of their pay styles, assuming you do not play that class yourself.
Sorry if this post contains unique phrasing. English is not my original language.
Cheers to you!

Sunwell spriest here.
SW:D is terribly useful. It does require that you have a brain and refrain from using that button in certain places (Illidan P2, for example) but in general, it is your friend and should be used whenever the cooldown is up and it’s safe to do so. A resto druid in half-decent gear can heal up the damage with a single lifebloom.
Spriests will also heal themselves up with VE eventually, but many avoid using VE because of threat issues. This is a tank problem. If your spriests can’t use VE without pulling, needz moar teeps.
Also, check overheal done on that priest. Just put one healer (priest or druid, preferably) on HAEL SHADY duty and all will be well.

Honestly i’m a healer and agree with the Author, Its not my job to top off your DPS caused damage unless you have discussed it in person, and before you ask i have been around since the original Beta, and have a warlock so i understand self harm.
BUT BUGGER OFF
