When raiders reach their limits.

August 29th, 2008 · 5 Comments

My guild is currently working on Archimonde. I know, I know, you all assumed I was in some crazy progression guild that had finished the whole game. Don’t blame me, blame the slow asses in my guild. Actually we just started late. We didn’t start raiding until five or six months after BC hit, and we were pretty casual for awhile. But fighting Archimonde has me thinking about something. Is there a limit to how far a player can proceed in this game? Does the learning curve reach a point where for some raiders it becomes a wall?

Archimonde is unique compared to all the fights that come before it. If one person dies, it’s almost a guaranteed wipe. In the fifty or so attempts we’ve made on him (yes that number pisses me off), we had one occasion where someone died and we were able to carry on after Archi used his Soul Charge ability. Unfortunately someone else died 30 seconds later. This means if one person screws up, and someone always does, the fight is over.

What confuses me, is that for myself and maybe half of my raid it seemed to take maybe a dozen attempts for us to get the fight down. It’s actually a very simple fight. Stay away from fire, stay spread out to minimize Air Bursts, decurse quickly, and be very careful when fear hits. I’ve stressed over and over how the only important thing in the fight is staying alive, but no matter how many times I say it, no matter how pissed off I get, no matter how much I rant and rave at the raid, people keep dying. A large number of the deaths are healers. They stand there and let the flames run over then, and then they either don’t heal themselves, or they wait until they are so blocked in by flames that they have no chance of healing through the damage. Are there some fights that players just can’t learn? Whether it’s through stupidity, lack of ability, or just carelessness they just can’t get the job done. I’m pretty sure we’re going to have to cut a half dozen people loose, or at least never take them to this fight again. And the really frustrating part, is that a few of the people who are constantly standing in fire and causing wipes are some of our more experienced raiders.

It’s occurred to me that many of these failed raiders probably screw up on other fights and I just don’t notice because even with some mistakes and a couple deaths every other fight we’ve done so far is winnable. There are fights in the game that are gear checks, healing checks, etc. Maybe Archimonde is a stupid check. You’ve made it this far, but before you go any farther, let’s make sure you’re not entirely retarded. Oh you are? Maybe you should find a resto druid and form an arena team.

try grouping up into 3 groups of ranged. one decurser to each group. basically, the people assigned to each decurser stay on him like stink on shit. move together, eat together, breather together and all that happy horseshit. the old guild tried the spread out strat and the idiots killed us by trying to think for themselves. give the idiots someone who knows what the fuck they’re doing to follow around and they’ll be fine.

    *Vent conversation*
Mage: I got feared into the doomfire so i need someone needs to heal me.
    Me: I got ya covered.
    (20 second later)
Mage: I put myself on auto walk after the fall and ran through the doomfire. Sorry.
Me: *sigh* I’ll keep you alive, just don’t do it again.
    (30 seconds later)
Mage: Doomfire hit me again while i was trying to get get my spell off.
Me: Attention all healers, do not heal Mage. He is to either run to the water and bandage or he’s fucked.

try going back a few months to when you could exploit the fucker on the mountain. if the idiots in your guild cant avoid fire - just like some idiots cant click portals on kalec - they’d have the same chance of making a fucking time machine.

Split decursers in groups.Make priests fearward decursers..Use an eye of kilrog or whatever is the name to show each group where they should
run when a fire is near them and make sure they run on a str8 line away from boss!!! Some of our raiders were running in circles closer and closer
    to the tank..Tards

First drop-in, so belated comment. Archimonde attempts caused me to ask myself exactly the same question. I’m thinking he was intended as something like a retard filter.

As far as healer death rate.. any boss fight involving moving fire tends to result in dead trees. Usually sooner rather than later. Ban treeform outright and you’re set.
