Dps doesn’t win fights.

September 26th, 2008 · 9 Comments

I’ve gotten a lot of comments over the last week, and a large number of them have been…

You complain about how no one knows how to use ability X, Y, and Z, but you clearly don’t know anything because I put out amazing dps.

… and?

Let me rephrase that.  So fucking what.  I hate to burst your bubble but very few fights are won by raw dps.  Unless you’re in a top raiding guild that is burning through content so fast that you getting every server first kill, chances are your dps are geared so well that you can mostly ignore enrage timers.  When a smart raid leader puts together a raid, he doesn’t just pick people based on dps.  It’s usually your class abilites that he or she is picking.  A rogue may outdps an enhancement shaman, but the shaman buffs four other people.  A lock may out dps a mage, but he can’t cast int buffs or sheep on trash pulls.

Look at the last time your guild beat an enrage timer boss for the first time.  Chances are you had the same gear when you killed it as you did on earlier attempts when you ran out of time.  So what made the difference?  Simple, people learned their jobs, which let them focus on maximizing their dps.  Anyone that can hammer a couple of buttons will see their dps jump 25% or more once they learn their part in a fight and can focus on button mashing.

What separates a great player from a medicore one, is mastery of ALL of their class and spec abilities.  Which is why I don’t care how much dps your Hunter does, when you can’t remember to feign death.  I don’t give a shit that your Lock can hit 2k dps if you don’t life drain when your health is low.  I do great damage on my Shaman, but if I kept forgetting to drop totems, I’d kick my ass out of the raid.

Then I’d come here and post about how much I suck!

So true… So true, I can’t fathom how much that counts in T6-Sunwell raiding when organization > superior dps when it comes to complex fights or so.

And I PARTICULARLY love it when someone who leaves the guild (for [fill in the blank] lameass reason) keeps tabs on you in WWS and just LOVES to tell you how your guild is “suffering because of a lack of DPS.”

Only thing we’re suffering is letting your loud mouth into our forums. Haul ass troll.

Man, you and I are on the exact same wavelength. I’ve been raid leading for over a year now and reading your blog has made me feel like there is someone out there who “gets it.”

Keep it up; I’m eager to read more.

If only all dps’ers realised how true what you wrote is :<
Saw too many locks proud of their over 2k dps… on the 9th wipe on the same boss caused by them pulling aggro and wiping the rest of the raid.

Hi. Long time raiding warlock (3+ years) here, just wanting to say that your observations are very true.

While ‘Locks and Rogues may be more prone, any class can pull aggro and die. We had a ret Pally that died every boss fight, an enhance shaman (ankh for the win), an SP, etc

DPS, as we used to say, is an artform. Mind you, that’s a saying they made up to fuck with me after I got in trouble for pulling Gruul during our first week of attempts on him way back when (before Omen worked very well and coming fresh off the “leveling” break to 70, haha out of practice :P ).

It’s true tho. After that, never pulled aggro, rarely died in fights (Supremus and Council resulted in a few deaths, sometimes those volcanoes come out of nowhere, and from time to time you get hit with an envenom, followed by a flamestrike, and you don’t notice you run into a blizzard………)

Anyway good posts. Laughing it up over here ’cause it’s all true!

    Addition:

The rest of that last paragraph was supposed to be

“And I still managed to sustain 1900-2200DPS regularly without proving Darwin right!”

    :P

    Hahaha, brilliant post.

I raid as affliction utility lock, buffing shadow embrace and have malediction to help buff RAID dps.

Im sick of other warlocks telling me Id do better dps if I spec’d destro… who cares!

We now have a preist that pulls agro with over heals to be “top of the healing meters”… WTF!

  • 9 hi // Oct 28, 2008 at 11:18 am

i agree that 2k dps on a wipe is useless damage. i delete all my logs where the fight wasnt a win, regardless if i hit that 2k dps mark or not. but 2k on success fight must always be appreciated. it all comes down to when the boss drops dead on the floor: whos good at dps and who only knows how to stay alive.

the reason you are so angry is the fact that you have all the wrong players in your raid.

healers that for 20 seconds ignore the lock with low hp, locks which stand in the fire for 10 seconds and waste healers’ mana, hunters that cant remember to feign death, shamans forgetting to use totems, people pulling aggro.

these are fucking ridiculous problems that need to be fixed asap, not whined about, and it the raid leader’s responsibility to teach them or remove them. you owe it to the rest of the raid thats doing their job.

you need to find the elite few who can master their class, learn fast, and stay alive. you stay content with the last two and you have a nice steady progression guild that will beat everything but fail in sunwell. sorry.

    @angrylock
firstly, your meter should be ignoring overheals. secondly overheals cause no aggro. thirdly, you should make it clear that your raid does not appreciate meter worship.
