You can’t win World of Warcraft. There is never a point where the other side admits defeat and you get a gold star. The game is set up that way so you keep forking over your cash every month. There are quite a lot of people that seem to be perfectly happy playing the game and never accomplishing anything, but for most players, they come up with a way of measuring their progress so they know if they are ‘winning’. These achievements come in many forms. Some people try to dominate in pvp, others try to gather every pet in the game (these people scare me a little). Personally, I measure my success in the game by how far my guild has progressed in raiding. We’re working on Illidan right now (43% was our best attempt last night), and I think we’ll get him next week. But there is one group of players whose measure of success is very common, but incredibly annoying. People that think loot = win.
Now I’m not saying that wanting better loot is bad. I’m pretty sure everyone wants better gear. I know I do. But I want it for a reason. It lets me crank out more damage and live longer, so I can perform better in raids, and melt a few more faces in pvp. If you are skipping the rest of this post to send me some stupid comment about how skill > gear and that I must be the worst raider ever, just save your breath. Until you post a video of your raid killing Illidan in all greens just STFU. For me loot is just a means to an end.
I’m talking about those people that freak out over every item that drops. If you’ve ever led a raid, and had a player that sends you a whiny ass tell every time they get passed over for loot, you know who I’m talking about.
- I thought I was next in line!
- When do I get that!
- How come you gave that to her?! It’s because she’s a girl isn’t it?! I’ll cyber with you, just give me the sword!
- I’ve been gone for a month, but I’m back now, and I know I was half an hour late to the raid and forgot to bring mana potions, but I NEED that cloak!
If you’ve ever had someone freak out because you sharded an item that they could have used in an off spec that they never play, that’s the fucker I’m talking about.
But what is really annoying the shit out of me lately is that WotLK drops in five fucking weeks. And I still have people freaking out over loot. I have a few guys in my guild who have been raiding with me since the Karazhan days. I have a few others who despite joining later have made huge contributions to our raiding success. So if I can get those guys in 4 piece Tier 6, I’ll do it. They deserve it. I’ve even decided to pass on tier 6 and just be satisfied with the three piece I’m wearing so I can see more of my guildies get theirs. But after that small group gets theirs, I’ve been having everyone else just roll on loot that previously we would have assigned with our loot council. I honestly think we’re too close to LK for it to really matter. We’re not planning on going on to Sunwell, and we’re geared good enough to kill Illidan, so any other loot is just gravy. So why not spread it around and let everyone get something shiny.
And here in about five weeks, you’re all going to be leveling up again and replacing the stuff that you’ve worked your asses off for the last year to get. So chillax. Stop freaking out when you don’t get something. I actually kicked a guy out of our guild the other day because he freaked out over a necklace that dropped off Supremus that went to another player. Sent me a bitchy ass tell and then logged out. Fucking Supremus. Who we’ve had on farm for months. Grow the fuck up. Have fun being a loot whore when you can’t raid. Oh wait. Last I heard, he got so emo over being kicked out that he gave his account away and quit the game. Great, one more person who is holed up in their mom’s basement swearing to hunt me down and kill me. You should all get together and form a club or something.
Moral of the story. Loot is just some fucking pixels on a screen. And if pixels make you cry, you should find a new hobby. Like playing in traffic.

Omg man. Can i server transfer to be in your guild? You seem to be the kind of raid leader I ever wanted.
My C.V. says I have a funny accent and that I am as much angry as you.

“I’ve been gone for a month, but I’m back now, and I know I was half an hour late to the raid and forgot to bring mana potions, but I NEED that cloak!”
Such a classic. Had so many people in my guild like that, they come to a raid after weeks of inactivity and expect to get loot since “they didn’t get loot for such a long time”… WTF dude you weren’t raiding of course you don’t get loot!
Is it just me or are rogues the worst when it comes to loot whine? I think at least 50% of the loot whine in our guild since we started has been rogues.

The guy I just kicked out - a rogue.

Greetings, my character is Sodosma, i’m an undead warlock, currently working on downing KJ, and would like to congratulate you on your posting, critical thinking is and always shall be, to me, a sign of inteligence, though unfortunately not always accurate, simply because of naivety. Meaning, we don’t always know what will befall us and how it will hit us, thus we aren’t always in control of the infinite variables in life, or even in a game.

With that said, i need not say that of course, people who are too hungry for loot are moronic, however i do share a bit of a hunger problem myself: DPS. Yes, this reply of mine is to, with all due respect, correct you in a simple matter regarding your previous post “DPS doesnt win a fight”. I hope it’s ok to address in this topic a previous topic, it’s just that i want to be sure you’ll read it.
I’m a traditional dps-whore, “destroy” is my name and “moar” is my game, always have been really. I need not say aswell that a good dps will not only do the best dps possible for his class/gear but will survive and react quickly to whatever situation arises, and healers have always treated me well, no complains there really, obviously, you do 0 dps while dead. However a technique which i’ve only recently perfected is to know your tank well and know how to push the aggro to the very maximum without EVER pulling aggro. That’s right, i’ve done every single boss fight from scratch from gruul to Muru and only now do i know how to calculate exactly how many bolts will do the job per mob and how much can i push it. Now that i’m done introducing myself, i’ll present a bit of an alteration to your previous post title: “DPS does not win the fights, all the time”. You see, the truth is that places like BT are so ridiculously easy that a warlock doing a measly 1.6k dps and being top dpser is enough to kill Illidan, in fact, first time i killed illidan i was affliction! Truth is that, when you experience a certain degree of difficulty in fights, where dps is truly a part of the fight, you will see that DPS does make the fight. I wont even touch brutallus really, since due to tank TPS it will never really be a…dps race, though it is, but not quite the extreme of Muru or KJ. Now…in Muru i usually have a sustained 2.8k-3k dps (though it does involve some aoe naturally) and without that sort of dps, Muru would simply not go down. No, really, he would not go down. Not only do we have to dps harder then ever, we also have to dps more effectively then ever, as in, pushing the tank to the maximum and killing a tough mob in a few spare seconds. The dps necessary is insane, really, not to mention phase 2 that is like brutallus except…insane. Kill the bastard before everyone is swept away brutally in 2 minute or something. So if fights like Illidan were really tough as they ought to be, but arent, dps wouldnt just be an abstract notion but be actually a necessity, and the countless numbers of slacky dpsers would never get a raid spot. I hope this has provided some insight or otherwise a different perspective in raiding! Keep up the rant btw, i always enjoy hearing truth in an honest manner

I’m sure, that if LK was a few more months away, and my guild spent some time in Sunwell, I would posting rants on here about how fights are all about dps and how bad everyone is at pushing out their maximum damage.

Amen to that..
I need to introduce you to our GM some day, i think you were separated at birth.

If you put more than one of him in the same room with each other, two things can happen: One; An epiphany happens, the clouds part and the hand of God reaches down to anoint them with his holy blessing. They then proceed to eradicate blind idiocy, cure cancer and the common cold while simultaneously preventing global warming, discovering alternatives to fossil fuel and being hailed as the newest Mother Theresa.
Or Two: The resulting anger at being faced with more of himself would create a chain reaction, eventually calling down the Apocalypse.

Hi there nice read, Altho i think that some players that you call “Stressing over loot” are just anoyed by Unfairness of loot distribution. However, your RL so you can do whatever you want, but i would not join a raid that doesn’t use DKP. Its just clear to everyone else if your going to get an item or not. And there isn’t any bias from a RL who always has his friends and his best buddies get loot.

With loot and farm content, there also comes the people that wont sign up, or refuse to be part of the fight leading to the bosses we are currently trying to down. I have a warrior in my guild, who doesn’t sign up, does awesome dps, actually knows what he’s doing, and yet he wont sign up for raids because he is above them. Doesn’t need anything from the boss, and says stupid shit like, DPS warriors dont belong in a Supremus fight. So, he refuses, and doesn’t sign up to help the rest of the guild on the fights. Has no interest in MH because he has his T6 gloves, probably doesn’t like trying Archimonde, because he probably feels we can’t down him. Ugh.We haven’t downed Teron Gorefiend yet, and his elitist attitude has come out.

if i were you, i would consider introducing a dkp system for LK

I think when he posted this he assumed the loot distrubtion system was fair. He was more concerned about the people the bitch and whine about not getting loot after the loot is passed out.

I really appreciate how the stuff you are voicing is exactly what me and my guild are going thru. It seems as if the Full Moon came out in full force as the XPac gets closer.
I think some people feel a sense of failure for not “completing” BC. I run a small guild and we have only been able to muster a 25 man group a few times. And in the last month, the guild drama has been just insane.

Whats worse than those who stress over their own loot is those who get totally pissed off over loot you gave someone else that they didn’t even want for themselves. Once I gave this hunter who had just hit 70 and didn’t have much gear yet a cloak that wasn’t really designed for hunters but was still an improvement over his green cloak. The resto druid goes totally apeshit over it “How could you give him that when it isn’t hunter gear” now the druid is all epiced out, he didn’t want the cloak, so wth is the problem? it’s not like everyone was desperate for voids. Later I gave said hunter some leather shoulders that the druid wanted for an off-set but were definitely a major upgrade for him. Druid gets pissed again of course. I tell him, ok so you dont’ want me to give him gear that isn’t an upgrade for him, but you don’t want me to give him gear that is an upgrade for him, we brought him here specifically to get him gear, what exactly am I missing here?
20 Kevin // Oct 9, 2008 at 12:42 am
Good point Lueia, ive met a dozen ppl like that.
The next time a healing/spell leather gear drops which the druid wants, give it to the hunter and say it’s for his healing off spec / pet to chew on.
And when the druid erupts in flames, take a screenie and post the link here. I need a good laugh

“I’ve been gone for a month, but I’m back now, and I know I was half an hour late to the raid and forgot to bring mana potions, but I NEED that cloak!”
We have several people like this in my guild. They don’t show for progression bosses but when we finally get the boss we’ve been working on down, they start showing up and whine because they don’t get loot. We also have jerks that show up maybe 30% of the time, let us do all the work and get geared up then come in and get to our level of gear without having spent the time or dedication like we did.
I know you said don’t stress over loot - it’s not the loto that’s the problem. It’s these jerkoff leeches we have in our guild.
